I hope that this communication finds you all well and looking forward to the weekend- the weather has certainly improved and I hope that everyone is able to be outside enjoying some nature!

Open House and Corn Roast

Our Annual TRS Open House and Corn Roast was a huge success. Thank you to everyone that were able to come and see the spaces and classrooms in the building and then enjoy our Corn Roast outside in the beautful weather! A GIANT THANK YOU to our TRS School Council Members for planning, organizing and actioning the event! What a wonderful way to kick off our School Year in Kindness-Community-Heart!

Demographic Forms

It is imperative that online demographic forms are completed prior to Monday, September 21. These were due on Monday September 14, and we are currently missing 35% of our forms. To access the demographic verification forms, please log in to your mycbe account in order to complete the form.

Staffing Update

A communication was sent out to the impacted classroom this past week, and we are now sharing with the greater community that Ms. Jocelyn has accepted an Assistant Principalship at Silver Springs School. We are very happy for this next move in her career, though we are sad to see her move on from Terrace Road School. Once we have someone in place for the grade 1/2 position, we will reach out to families once again.

Terry Fox

We have our annual Terry Fox Run occurring next Thursday, September 24th at 2:45 PM. Our fundraising goal is set at $1000 and we are encouraging students to bring in a toonie for Terry on that day in order to support!

Attendance

As the days go by, we are closely monitoring student attendance, including lates and absences. There are some patterns developing, and I will be reaching out to some families next week in order to discuss the importance of arriving on time each morning, and attending daily if not sick. For students with lower attendance rates, we will work with them in order to set attendance goals in school. Often, once students arrive, they are quickly able to recover and carry on with their days.

Communication Strategy

At Terrace Road School, we believe strong communication with families is essential to supporting student success and ensuring that there are no surprises at student conferences or during reporting periods. Throughout the year, we use a variety of intentional communication strategies to keep families informed about their child’s learning and progress. Teaching teams will use plastic zipper folders to regularly send home artifacts of learning, accompanied by rubrics and other assessment information so families can see what their child is learning and how they are progressing. Classroom blogs will be updated weekly to provide a window into classroom learning, while the Principal’s Week at a Glance will keep families connected to important school-wide information, events, and reminders. These ongoing communications are complemented by meetings, phone calls, and emails when more individualized communication is needed. Together, these approaches create a continuous partnership between home and school, ensuring that families have a clear understanding of their child’s learning, strengths, areas for growth, and next steps well before formal reporting times.

Clubs

At Terrace Road School, we encourage all students to take advantage of the many opportunities available to enrich their experience at TRS. Ms. Bisson’s Run Club is underway and runs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00–8:25 a.m. until October 9; students should meet on the compound. We will also be launching our Student Action Committee, with representatives from each class, led by Mr. Buchanan. This group will meet every two weeks to share student perspectives and ideas about how we can continue to make TRS an even better place to learn and belong. Our Student Leadership Club, also led by Mr. Buchanan, will take on a variety of student-led initiatives, including setting up for Celebrations of Learning, playground clean-up, room organization, Spirit Days, and more. In addition, Mr. Buchanan will host a weekly Lunch with the Principal, with passes given to students on Thursdays for a chance to enjoy lunch and conversation together in the principal’s office. Finally, we will soon begin preparing our Grade 5 and 6 students for School Patrols. There are many ways for students to get involved, find their voice, contribute to our community, and make their time at TRS meaningful.

Year Focus

This year, we will continue to hold firmly to our commitment to meet the needs of every student, every day. No excuses. As educators, our responsibility is to know our students well, recognize their strengths and areas for growth, and continually adapt our practice so that every child has the opportunity to succeed. We are also entering Year 3 of our School Development Plan, with a continued focus on strengthening student learning in Writing and developing both conceptual understanding and procedural fluency in Mathematics. These areas will remain central to our professional learning, collaborative work, and classroom practice throughout the year. Underlying all of this work will be our ongoing focus on Student Engagement—asking ourselves how we can intentionally build classrooms, common spaces, and learning environments where students feel a genuine sense of belonging, connection, and purpose. We want every student to know that their voice matters, that their ideas are valued, and that they play an important role in shaping their own learning and our school community. Our goal is not simply to improve achievement, but to create the conditions where every student can feel known, supported, challenged, and empowered to do their very best.
