Welcome

Everyone at Terrace Road School is pleased to extend a warm welcome to all students, parents, and caregivers as we begin a new school year. Our goal is to work in partnership with our entire school community to provide the best possible educational experiences for our students. We recognize that families are a child’s first and most important teachers, and we value open communication and involvement as essential to student success.

Our commitment is to support every student in reaching their fullest potential. At Terrace Road School, our programs nurture the intellectual, social, artistic, and physical growth of our learners. We strive to engage students both individually and collectively, helping them to discover their unique learning styles and personalize their learning journeys. We are especially proud to provide meaningful land-based learning opportunities—from outdoor classrooms and school gardening projects to learning experiences that draw on Indigenous perspectives and connections to the natural world. These activities allow students to deepen their academic learning while also building a sense of belonging, responsibility, and stewardship for the land.

Equally important, we focus on fostering a safe, caring, and inclusive environment where every student feels valued. By nurturing a strong sense of belonging and care for one another, we ensure that each member of our community knows they are respected, supported, and capable of success. We welcome and value strong partnerships with parents, caregivers, and community stakeholders, knowing that together we can achieve the best outcomes for our students. Please use this handbook as a resource to strengthen the connection between home and school, and do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or concerns.

We hope the information provided here will answer many of the questions you may have about our school. For additional details, please connect with your child’s teacher. We look forward to working closely with you in supporting your child throughout the school year.

We are confident this will be an exciting and rewarding year of learning for your child and your family.

Our School

Terrace Road School is located in the northwest community of Montgomery. Our school is a dynamic and caring place to learn.  We are a diverse, inclusive and welcoming school community. Student learning is paramount and we believe we can achieve our best work when we do it together.  You are invited to learn more about TRS by exploring our website.

Our school is organized around ten classrooms. We have a morning Kindergarten program. Our grade one to six classrooms are organized into; a three Grade 1/2 classes three 3/4 classes, two grade 5/6 classes and a Division II ALP class.  At the completion of Grade 6 students move to FE Osborne School and then to Bowness High School.

In our ALP class, students from across Area I schools are bussed to the Division II Adapted Learning Program. We have a teacher and two educational assistants assigned to work with students with special learning needs.

Almost all of the students who attend Terrace Road come to us from the communities of Montgomery and Bowness and walk to and from school each day.

Summit Kids, a business offering before and after-school care, leases space in the building and provide services to local families whose children attend Terrace Road School

School History

Terrace Road school was built in 1952 and named after the road that ran adjacent to the property at the time. In 1958 the streets were renamed to allow them to conform to the naming conventions of the City of Calgary. Montgomery was still an independent town at this time. The town name and many of the street names had been chosen by James Shouldice, the original founder of the community. Montgomery, named after Field Marshall Montgomery of Alamein, was annexed, at its request, by the City of Calgary in 1963.

School Development Plan

Each year, our school prepares a development plan with input from teachers, school staff, students and parents. We review many sources of data, including report cards, provincial achievement test results and school surveys. Based on this information, we create our plan identifying targeted areas for growth. Our school development plan is not meant to represent all of the work that takes place in our school, but rather it focuses on specific areas for improvement.

School Improvement Results Report

Our school also prepares a results plan, which looks at our previous school year. It shows our students’ achievement and progress in meeting the goals and outcomes as set out by the CBE and Alberta Education, outlines some of the highlights of our school development plan and gives an overview of our school. You can look on the CBE website for system-wide results.
