Hello TRS Parents and Guardians! Welcome to the end of week 2 and what we hope will be a wonderful weekend for you and your families! The school this week has been buzzing with acitivity and we are so proud of the way our students have welcomed in this new year of learning- they are kind, joyful and caring in our classrooms, hallways and on the playground!
Communication Strategy
At Terrace Road School, we believe strong communication with families is essential to supporting student success and ensuring that there are no surprises at student conferences or during reporting periods. Throughout the year, we use a variety of intentional communication strategies to keep families informed about their child’s learning and progress. Teaching teams will use plastic zipper folders to regularly send home artifacts of learning, accompanied by rubrics and other assessment information so families can see what their child is learning and how they are progressing. Classroom blogs will be updated weekly to provide a window into classroom learning, while the Principal’s Week at a Glance will keep families connected to important school-wide information, events, and reminders. These ongoing communications are complemented by meetings, phone calls, and emails when more individualized communication is needed. Together, these approaches create a continuous partnership between home and school, ensuring that families have a clear understanding of their child’s learning, strengths, areas for growth, and next steps well before formal reporting times.
Weather Appropriate Clothing
At Terrace Road School, we believe students benefit from being outside every day, regardless of the weather. We ask families to please ensure children come to school prepared for the conditions, including having a rain jacket or waterproof clothing on wet days. With yesterday’s on-and-off rain showers, many students were not adequately prepared and became wet and uncomfortable. Please help us support daily outdoor play and learning by sending your child to school dressed appropriately for the weather.
Open House and Corn Roast
We are excited to kick off the 2026–27 school year by bringing our TRS community together for one of our favourite annual traditions! Join us on Thursday, September 17 for our Open House from 4:00–5:30 p.m., followed by our Annual Corn Roast from 5:00–7:30 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with old friends, meet new members of our community, visit classrooms, and celebrate the beginning of another great year at Terrace Road School. More details will be shared in the coming week, but for now, please save the date and plan to come together with us as we celebrate the start of our 2026–27 school year! We can’t wait to see you there!
Provincial Screeners
Beginning in the 2026/27 school year, schools are required to conduct literacy and numeracy screenings to all kindergarten to grade 5 children and students.
Literacy and numeracy are essential skills that develop in the critical early years of education. These foundational skills ensure success in later years of a student's education and in later life. Screening children’s and students’ learning in literacy and numeracy in their early years provides critical information to teachers, parents, and Alberta Education and Childcare to help children and students get additional support if they need it.
Kindergarten screenings occur only in the Winter, while screenings for all students in grades 1 to 3 occur in both the Fall and Winter, with a Spring screening required for students identified as requiring additional supports from the Winter screening. Students in grades 4 and 5 are required to be screened in the Fall with an additional re-screening in Spring for those who required additional supports.
School staff share literacy and numeracy screening results with parents following the screenings. Results from the literacy and numeracy screenings are intended to help teachers identify and address gaps in their kindergarten children’s and grades 1 to 5 students’ foundational understandings of literacy and numeracy.

Demographics and Student Forms
Our forms are now online! You will receive emails from CBE directly for demographic forms to complete. We have also sent out our Welcome Package, including the Medical Forms, Consent Forms, and student Admirable Use forms. Please take time to fill these in and return at your convenience.
Swag
Our school swag is now available to order once again if you require new sizes. Sherisse sent out the link in a communication yesterday. Feel free to call the office if you have any questions!
Clubs
At Terrace Road School, we encourage all students to take advantage of the many opportunities available to enrich their experience at TRS. Ms. Bisson’s Run Club is underway and runs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00–8:25 a.m. until October 9; students should meet on the compound. We will also be launching our Student Action Committee, with representatives from each class, led by Mr. Buchanan. This group will meet every two weeks to share student perspectives and ideas about how we can continue to make TRS an even better place to learn and belong. Our Student Leadership Club, also led by Mr. Buchanan, will take on a variety of student-led initiatives, including setting up for Celebrations of Learning, playground clean-up, room organization, Spirit Days, and more. In addition, Mr. Buchanan will host a weekly Lunch with the Principal, with passes given to students on Thursdays for a chance to enjoy lunch and conversation together in the principal’s office. Finally, we will soon begin preparing our Grade 5 and 6 students for School Patrols. There are many ways for students to get involved, find their voice, contribute to our community, and make their time at TRS meaningful.
Year Focus
This year, we will continue to hold firmly to our commitment to meet the needs of every student, every day. No excuses. As educators, our responsibility is to know our students well, recognize their strengths and areas for growth, and continually adapt our practice so that every child has the opportunity to succeed. We are also entering Year 3 of our School Development Plan, with a continued focus on strengthening student learning in Writing and developing both conceptual understanding and procedural fluency in Mathematics. These areas will remain central to our professional learning, collaborative work, and classroom practice throughout the year. Underlying all of this work will be our ongoing focus on Student Engagement—asking ourselves how we can intentionally build classrooms, common spaces, and learning environments where students feel a genuine sense of belonging, connection, and purpose. We want every student to know that their voice matters, that their ideas are valued, and that they play an important role in shaping their own learning and our school community. Our goal is not simply to improve achievement, but to create the conditions where every student can feel known, supported, challenged, and empowered to do their very best.
Bell Times
Our Bell Times remain the same this year, except for our PM kindergarten class that will run from 12:19 each day and end with other students at 3:16. Kindergarten will alternate Fridays, with AM attending one Friday, and PM attending the next.
Volunteer Process
Parents and guardians can register as volunteers through the SchoolEngage tab in their MyCBE account. As part of the registration process, all volunteers must review the POPA requirements and sign to indicate their agreement with the conditions outlined in the form.
New This Year: Community members who do not have a child registered with CBE must complete their volunteer registration in person at the school where they wish to volunteer. This change allows school staff to verify that volunteers have reviewed and acknowledged their privacy obligations under Alberta's Protection of Privacy Act (POPA).

School Safety
Please be mindful of the following in order to keep our community safe:
-Please keep the bus zone clear in the mornings and after school.
-Please do not cut through our parking lot by walking as teachers are arriving and vision is blurred
-Do to supervision and exisiting plans in place, please know that there will be no drop-in appointments entertained this year. We are all happy to meet, but those meetings must be scheduled.
-ALL ADULTS MUST ENTER THE BUILDING FROM THE FRONT DOOR. This is an ongoing safety issue, and we simply cannot have adults in our halls.
