Purdy's Fundraiser
We have started our Purdy's fundraiser, in which funds collected are used to purchase needs for the school, support student learning, and build out community! Fliers were sent home last week with details attached. The fundraiser will end March 25, and pick-up will happen on April 7.
Crocus Photo Capture
We are excited to introduce the Ki'piaapi/Prairie Crocus Photo Challenge at Terrace Road School! This challenge is an opportunity for students to explore the beauty of nature while learning about the cultural significance of the prairie crocus to the Blackfoot people of our area in Calgary.
The prairie crocus (Anemone patens) is one of the first flowers to bloom in spring, symbolizing rejuvenation and the welcoming of a new season. For the Blackfoot people, it marks the transition from winter to spring, signaling renewal and change. This resilient flower also holds medicinal and cultural importance in Blackfoot traditions.
As part of Terrace Road School’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, we recognize the importance of learning from the land. This challenge encourages students to observe and appreciate the natural world while deepening our understanding of Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing.
How to Participate:
1. Find a Ki'piaapi/Prairie Crocus – Look for this early spring flower in natural areas around Calgary.
2. Take a Photo – Capture a creative and artistic image of the crocus in its natural habitat (Please DO NOT PICK IT!!).
3. Submit Your Photo – Send your best picture to Dan at djbuchanan@cbe.ab.ca by May 1.
We encourage students and families to take this opportunity to connect with the land and reflect on the deep relationships Indigenous peoples have with the plants around us. Selected photos will be showcased at the school and shared with our community!
We look forward to seeing your amazing photos and celebrating the beauty and significance of the prairie crocus together.
