Greetings TRS Families!

This week at Terrace Road School, we continue to build a strong sense of identity, community, and shared learning. We are excited to unveil our new school logo, now proudly displayed in the hallway outside the main office—a visual representation of who we are and what we value as a learning community. Yesterday, we were also honoured to welcome Elder Sandra Many Feathers, who guided staff in deepening our understanding of circle pedagogy and the concept of ethical space, helping us thoughtfully reflect on the relationship between Western and Indigenous ways of knowing. These experiences continue to shape our work as we strive to create a welcoming, inclusive, and responsive environment for all learners.

Sound Kreations and School Development Plan

Our recent Sound Kreations residency provided an incredible opportunity for students to build both their creative skills and their resilience. As part of our School Development Plan focus on strengthening student perseverance, this experience challenged students to step outside of their comfort zones, collaborate with peers, and stay committed to the creative process. Throughout the residency, students learned that success does not come instantly—it is developed through effort, practice, and a willingness to keep going when things feel difficult. The pride on students’ faces as they showcased their final pieces was a powerful reminder that hard work and dedication truly pay off, reinforcing an important message that extends far beyond the classroom.

Food Drive

We are excited to share that our school will be hosting a Food Drive from April 20–24 in support of the Calgary Food Bank. Food insecurity continues to impact many individuals and families in our community, and this initiative provides an important opportunity for our students to learn about the realities of food scarcity in a meaningful and age-appropriate way. As part of our commitment to supporting the whole child, we strive to build empathy, compassion, and a sense of social responsibility in our students. By participating in this food drive, students will see that their collective efforts can make a tangible difference and contribute to positive change within our community. We thank our families in advance for their generosity and support.

TRS Flex Time

Every Wednesday after school at TRS, Ms. Hassen and I offer TRS Flex time, where students are encouraged to bring work that they need extra support with! We have our 4 regular students, BUT we strongly encourage our older students preparing for PATs to attend for this extra support. We run from 3:16-4:00 p.m.

TRS Crocus Hunt

Last year at Terrace Road School, we started a new tradition for one of the first signs of spring in Alberta, which is the appearance of the crocus. We would love to continue that traditional this year- once the snow has most cleared, we invite families to go on walks and snap some beautiful photos of the crocus, which welcomes our beautiful Alberta Spring. We will add these to our Crocus Bulletin Board in our main foyer, now known internally as the Confluence- where the Bow Hallway meets the Elbow Hallway in our school. Crocus photos can be emailed to djbuchanan@cbe.ab.ca.

School Dance

We are so happy to welcome families to our first Dance of the year, our Annual TRS SPRING DANCE! The dance will occur on April 30 with kindergarten to grade 2 attending from 6 until 6:50 and then transitioning out to allow our grades 3-6 to come into the dance from 7 until 8 pm. Please remember that our dances are all chaperoned by parents and family members, so if your child is attending, we ask that you attend as well.

Survey Questions Answered

I will ensure to answer a few questions for our recent survey here each week:

Does Terrace Road School offer before and after school care for students? If yes how can I register my child? Terrace Road School does not offer before and after care, but a private company, Summit Kids, rents our stage for before and after care. You can access Summit Kids via their website: https://summitkids.ca/camps/

How will you continue to provide small class sizes and individual support for students when the overall school population is growing? This is a great question, and one that we put at the forefront of all of our planning, particularly at this time of year. Alberta Education provides a specific number of dollars for Kindergarten students, division 1 (1-3) and division 2 (4-6) students. We use that money in our spring budget to support all staffing, including teachers, librarian, Educations Assistants etc. The more students we receive, the more funding we receive. The CBE also has a complexity funding model that looks at dozens of demographic, learning, and social metrics and statistics to best support specific schools.
