TRS Updates

I hope that this communication finds people well and preparing for summer! I know that some of our families have been impacted directly by the ongoing water crisis in Calgary. If, at any point during the repairs, you find your family without water, please let us know and we will do what we can in order to ensure you have your water needs met.

We had our final TRS School Council Meeting on June 13, and we were able to provide families with some important updates. Our numbers continue to climb at Terrace Road, and we are now hovering around 195 students, which is good. With that in mind, we are beginning our school year with the following grade configurations:

  • One kindergarten (a.m.) Two grade 1/2 classrooms One 2/3 classroom
  • Two 3/4 classrooms Two 5/6 classrooms Paced Learning Program Resource
  • Music (0.5)

We were also very please to announce a number of residencies and field trips that have already been booked for next year, including Outdoor School for 5/6, swimming, skiing, Artists in Residence, Alien in-line, FitSet Ninja, and Elev8 Lacrosse- This is just a start!

We have also made the decision, in consult with parents and teachers, to move past agendas for the next school year. Each teacher will be using a blog format for weekly updates and to post important events. Students will also have an ‘artifact bag’ in which they bring home artifacts of learning to discuss with their families.

TRS Casino Update

Mark your calendars! Our next Terrace Road School Casino is happening on December 4 and 5. I know that it seems like a long ways away, but we want to ensure that we are full of volunteers on those days/nights. The casino is fundamental in supporting programming and opportunities for learning at Terrace Road School. The dollars that are allocated to our school through the casino go towards purchasing sports equipment, funding field trips and in-class experiences, technology such as ipads and chromebooks etc. Please do consider coming out and supporting our learning community at TRS.

Corn Roast

Our Terrace Road School Council is happy to bring back the Terrace Road Corn Roast next year. Again, save the date! The Corn Roast is scheduled to happen on September 12. This is a chance to gather as a community to kick off the 2024-25 school year in a good way! There will be more details to follow, but for now, save the date!

June is Pride Month

The Calgary Board of Education strives to ensure that all our schools are safe and caring places for all students and staff. As a public school system, we welcome and celebrate students from diverse backgrounds, perspectives and beliefs.

At Terrace Road school, we have honoured and recognized our unique school community throughout the school year with events such as Orange Shirt Day, Black History Month, Christmas, and Ramadan. June is Pride Month, a time to recognize the pursuit of equality and rights for 2SLGBTQ+ individuals. The CBE reaffirms its commitment to creating safe and caring learning and work environments for 2SLGBTQ+ students and staff. At Terrace Road School, we will recognize this occasion by spending time discussing the concepts of equality and equity for all Humans, Human Rights, and by having age-appropriate conversations with students in response to any questions that may arise organically during classroom discussions on current events. Our Pride Club will also be putting up a few stickers/posters in the school promoting Pride Month Awareness.

We acknowledge that each family and community have unique experiences with different recognitions and celebrations, and any commemorative activities in our schools may be perceived differently. However, classroom-based activities and lessons that promote diversity and inclusion are not subject to exemptions under the Education Act.

Home Communication

As a community, we deeply value the communication we have with our families regarding events, tasks, assessments and learning in our school. We also recognize that time is valuable to everyone, and we are constantly looking for ways to streamline effective communication. As a staff, we will be making some changes (as a whole group) to our communication methods for next year in order to:

  • Provide clarity
  • Reduce over-communication and duplication
  • Demonstrate student learning and progress frequently
  • Ensure understanding of what students are doing in class and how they are being assessed against the curriculum and program of studies

Once we have some final decisions in place, we will communicate those with the community, and the tweaks will be implemented at the beginning of next year.

Field Trips and Fees

We do have a number of field trips and in-school experiences scheduled over the next few weeks. There will be forms coming home for families to sign, and fees will be assigned to your MyCBE accounts. Please do not hesitate to call the office if you have any questions or concerns regarding a fee applied to your account.
