Hello Terrace Road Families! Welcome back to another exciting week of learning at TRS! We are thrilled to welcome students back after what we hope was a restful and fun-filled weekend together with family! This is a shorter week of learning, but the learning will be rich as we focus in on our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation at Terrace Road. Our annual commitment can be accessed here on our website: https://terraceroad.cbe.ab.ca/documents/6cd71201-fb53-40db-a8fe-1306864f9c1f/Terrace-Road-TRC-Commitment-2024-25.pdf
Orange Shirt Day
Today, and every day at Terrace Road School, we work towards Reconciliation. Today is Orange Shirt Day- the day that we wear orange shirts as a community to highlight the generational impact of Residential Schools on the Indigenous cultures across Canada. Children were taken from homes and families rich in culture, and placed in government funded schools, sometimes many 100s of kilometers away, being separated for months at a time. The overarching goal of the schools was one of assimilation of youth. For more information, please visit https://orangeshirtday.org/phyllis-story/#story. As school, we are committed to the following:
All Terrace Road School students and staff will begin our work in the Heart Domain by continuing to improve structures and processes that facilitate positive conflict resolution for students by focusing our work on restorative practices, relationship repair, circle talks, and inclusive pedagogy. We will provide clear, welcoming, and transparent communication processes with Indigenous families. In the Body Domain, TRS students and staff will engage with the school community to learn about the land where Terrace Road School is located.
School Zone Safety
We continue to receive a number of concerns & complaints from our greater community regarding safety within our school zone. The minor accident that we had last week in front of our building is a solid reminder. Please remember:
1. To stop completely at STOP signs.
2. Be aware of your speed- 30km/hr in school zones
3. Watch for our AMA School Safety Patrols as they set up and help our students and families cross our intersections safely. We will be adding an additional crossing just North of our current crossing in November.
Thank you for keeping our students safe!
TRS SWAG Orders
Thank you for making your orders! The school will be receiving the swag on October 21st!
Clubs
A part of the fabric of Terrace Road School that makes our community so amazing is our student-run clubs. Clubs will be starting up soon, with club forms available for students in the office beginning the first week of October. We encourage all students interested in running a club to grab a form with the understanding that we will do our best to ensure we support the club, but also that it is ok to hear ‘no’ or ‘not yet’, and then make new plans- this helps to build student resiliency in a supportive environment.
Snacks and Food
Food is vital for learning and at TRS, we ensure that students have access to healthy snacks in the morning and in the afternoon. Can you please have a conversation with your child(ren) to see if their snacks/lunches are sufficient? We are definitely supplying more than usual. If you are unable to provide more food, no worries at all- we've got you covered, but as kids grow, they often require an uptick in quantity of food from home.
Online Forms
Our yearly demographic forms are due today (demographics and annual authorization forms and Citizenship Information Updates. These forms are accessed through your MyCBE/PowerSchool Account and then clicking through your School Engage Tile. If you have not yet created a MyCBE/Powerschool Account, please go here and follow the instructions HERE.
Communication
Each Friday, teachers have time to update their blogs and make sure that families have a window into the learning of their child’s classroom! Please do take time to read through the short messages, see the pictures, and use the update to engage in conversation with your child about learning happening at school! When we are all all-in on student learning, students feel supported, safe, and secure in taking risks in their learning and we all have a clear understanding of what students are currently able to do in their learning.
Communication Folders will be a key aspect of our vision for communication this year between home and school. These folders are zip-up, durable plastic folders that will contain student artifacts of learning for parents to look through with their children, ask questions about, and engage in learning from the home. When there is an artifact of learning, there will be a signature page attached, with room for a parent comment as well.
Have a wonderful week, everyone and please feel free to check out the teach blogs here:
