Happy Wednesday Terrace Road School Families. I hope that you are all well. As I indicated this morning, I wanted to intentionally pause our weekly communication in order to ensure that I would be able to provide you all with up-to-date information regarding impending strike action, set to begin on October 6.

Strike Action Updates

  • Please refer to the email sent out today to all parents from the Calgary Board of Education- There are important details within that communication.
  • Summit Kids- Summit will be running full-day camps at the Terrace Road Campus during the imminent labour action. Please connect with Summit at terraceroad@summitkidsyyc.ca
  • The school will be closed to all ATA staff effective October 6.
  • All in-school, extra-curricular, and off-site activities are cancelled from October 6 through to October 31. CBE Senior Leadership is advising schools that this decision for cancellations is necessary to focus on learning when classes resume. For our school, this includues:
    • October 9 – School Photo Day
    • October 16- Healthy Hunger- Papa John's Pizza
    • October 23- School Council Meeting

  • Once the strike has reached a resolution, schools will work with families regarding fees paid for cancelled activities.
  • Dates could be extended depending on when the labour action is resolved.

Terrace Road School Fall Family Survey

We are encouraging all families to complete the Terrace Road School Fall Family Survey. The information gathered through this survey helps us make informed decisions for the school, better understand parent perspectives, and come to know our learners more holistically. Your feedback is an important part of shaping the learning experiences at Terrace Road School.

You can access the survey here: Terrace Road School Fall Family Survey

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

We hope that families were able to take time yesterday to reflect on the significance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day is an important opportunity to honour the survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the lasting impact these schools have had on Indigenous Peoples across Canada. As we continue the work of reconciliation, we encourage children to share their reflections and learning from this day with their families, fostering meaningful conversations that deepen our collective understanding and commitment.

At Terrace Road School, our School Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation is ongoing and purposeful. This includes recognizing and honouring significant cultural observances and dates, as well as embedding Indigenous ways of knowing and being into our task design and planning. Through this work, we strive to create a learning environment where reconciliation is not limited to a single day, but is woven into the fabric of our teaching and learning every day.

Kindergarten Note from Mrs. Kinnear

Hello! My name is Mrs. Madeline Kinnear, and I’m excited to be returning to Terrace Road School as a kindergarten teacher. With a background in Design, I bring a unique perspective to early childhood education, blending creativity and design thinking into my teaching approach. I believe that children learn best through play-based, hands-on experiences that spark their curiosity and encourage exploration. My focus is on building strong numeracy and literacy skills while fostering creativity and problem-solving abilities. I also value outdoor learning as an essential part of discovery, allowing students to connect with nature and develop a sense of wonder. I’m passionate about creating a nurturing and inspiring environment where every child feels empowered to discover, create, and grow.

Roots of Empathy

Ms Farhana is looking for a volunteer family who sould be willing to come into Terrace Road School with their 2-4 month old baby. The Roots of empathy program includes 9 classroom visits over the entire school year. The baby becomes the teacher as students learn about growth, development, and themselves through the interaction. Please reach out if you are interested.

Healthy Hunger

We are all set for another year of fun lunches and fun snacks!

If you don’t have a Healthy Hunger account, please go to healthyhunger.ca and register your student by creating a parent account.

Once you’ve created your account, you can go ahead and order lunches and snacks for your student.

We will be having one fun lunch and one fun snack per month, except for February when we will only have a fun snack.

Only students who are in kindergarten AND attend Summit Kids in the afternoon are able to order, as the lunches will be delivered to the Summit class room.

Please be aware the cut off date for ordering lunches/snacks is 5 days before the event at 11:59pm. For example, our first lunch is Thursday October 16, there for the cut off will be Saturday October 11 at 11:59 pm.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to reach out to the office and we will connect you with our Healthy Hunger Lead, Katie Messel.

Clothing Donations

We are seeing a rise in the need for particular clothing items at Terrace Road School. We need pants in sizes ranging from 5 years to 12 years. We would also love to have some shoes in our collection, underwear (NEW and in all genders) and socks. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Communication at TRS

Our goal at Terrace Road School is to maintain timely, open, and effective communication with all families. We want everyone to feel connected to what students are learning in class and aware of upcoming activities.

This year, you can expect:

  • Weekly classroom blog updates from teachers
  • Communication folders with current learning artifacts
  • Phone calls from teachers to share successes and maintain strong connections
  • TRS Instagram: @terraceroadcbe for a window into the learning happening at Terrace Road School.

We believe that working in partnership with families helps every child thrive, and we look forward to ongoing collaboration throughout the year.

School Council

cancelled...Our next School Council meeting will take place on Thursday, October 23, at 6:00 p.m. I encourage all families to come out and take part in this important council, which plays a direct role in supporting student learning and strengthening the sense of community at Terrace Road School. Your voice and perspective are invaluable, and we hope to see many of you there.
