Welcome to the winter season! It’s cold and snowy this week, and we’re excited to embrace all the fun that comes with it. This week, students can join Chess Club on Tuesdays at lunch from 12:20–12:45, where all skill levels are welcome to play and learn. We are also running Leadership Club on Thursdays, giving students the chance to share ideas, take initiative, and help make Terrace Road School an even better place.

Junior High Redesignation for Montgomery

For families of grade 6 students that are impacted by the CBE's redesignation of all Montgomery community students to Thomas B. Riley (TBR) from F.E. Osborne School. Mrs. Austin, the Principal of T.B. Riley, is planning on inviting Terrace Road families of GRADE 6 STUDENTS ONLY to an open house in January. There will be more details to follow. As well, you are more than welcome to email Mrs. Austin at taaustin@cbe.ab.ca (copy/paste) for additional information about Thomas B. Riley School.

Winter Weather Readiness

As the colder weather settles in, we want to ensure all students are safe, warm, and ready to learn throughout the school day. Please make sure your child comes to school dressed for winter conditions each day. This includes snow pants, mitts, a toque, and warm winter boots—especially as students spend time outside for recess and physical activity.

We also ask that every student keep a pair of indoor shoes at school. This not only helps keep our hallways dry and safe, but also ensures students are comfortable in their classrooms after coming in from the snow.

Thank you for helping us support a safe and healthy winter season at Terrace Road School.

School Zone Safety

With the winter months upon us and daylight hours changing, it’s especially important that we work together to keep everyone safe in our school zone. Our student patrols are now active each morning and afternoon, helping families cross safely at the designated crosswalk. Please remind your children to follow their directions and wait for the patrols to signal when it is safe to cross.

We are also asking all families to support a safer school zone by watching your speed, avoiding jaywalking, and always using the marked crosswalks—no matter how quick the shortcut might seem. Taking those extra few steps helps model strong safety habits for our students.

Finally, we encourage families to have a conversation at home about being aware and alert when crossing the street. Looking both ways, pausing before stepping off the curb, and removing distractions such as headphones or phones all make a meaningful difference.

Thank you for helping keep all members of our Terrace Road community safe.

Thank You to Our Swim Volunteers

A heartfelt thank you to all of our incredible Terrace Road School swim volunteers. Your time, energy, and willingness to support our students made this learning experience not only possible, but truly successful. Whether you helped with supervision, encouraged students in the water, or ensured everyone stayed organized and safe, you played an essential role in making swimming week run smoothly.

We absolutely could not have done this without you. Your commitment to our school community makes a real difference, and we are deeply grateful for your partnership and support.

Winter Concert

Students will perform this year's Winter Concert, Once Upon a Snowman, on Thursday, December 11thEveryone (Kindergarten - Grade 6) will participate in two performances of the show, one dress rehearsal in the morning (time TBD) and a performance in the evening at 6:00pm. Details about arrival time for the evening will be sent before the concert. Students do not need any special costumes or clothing for these performances; they should wear whatever makes them feel self-assured and confident.

To support capacity challenges, the evening performance is for students and immediate family members only. We are asking each family to limit their attendance to 2-3 people as a maximum so that all students can have supporters in attendance. Should other family members or friends wish to see the show, please consider attending the dress rehearsal during the day. Seating is on a first come, first served basis.

Thank you for your ongoing support and for making time in busy schedules to come together for our talented students. The focus of these performances, as always, is to support musical understanding in a positive context that is fun and meaningful for kids.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please connect with Katie McMillan at kamcmillan@cbe.ab.ca.

Survey for School Planning

Each year, part of my commitment to the familes of TRS is to ensure that they have time to share their perspective on their student and the direction of the school at Terrace Road. This is important data that informs the decisions we make at Terrace Road. Last year, we had 50+ respondants, and so far this year, we are at 39- the more voices and data we have, the better-informed we can be in making strong decisions. Please consider completing the survey HERE. Thank you in advance!

Survey Questions- Part of the survey opens up for questions, and I will endeavor to answer those questions here on a weekly basis.

School Conferences

Formal school conferences are upcoming on November 27 and 28th. The November 27 conferences will run from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the last slot being 7:45 p.m. The November 28 conferences will run from 8:00 a.m. through 1:00 p.m. A reminder that there is no school for students on this day.

Conferences are an important time of year for familes and the teacher to connect over their child's learning. It is extremely important for your child to attend conferences with you, as they are part of the triangulation of learning between teacher-parents-children, and the more voice we can can give to children, the deeper their sense of agency and ownership of learning will be. You can book conferences starting November 21st via your mycbe/powerschool account.

Thank you so much for the support and care that you each show for our community. My door is always open.. ie. my phone and email too! Take good care, and see you all this week at conferences!
