Dear Terrace Road Families,

We’re looking forward to a wonderful week ahead at Terrace Road School. This is our first full week of learning in some time, and we are excited to have everyone here and settled into their routines. A reminder that all students have swimming this week, so please ensure your child comes prepared with everything they need for their swim time.

Last Friday, we held our very first TRS Family Friday, and it was a tremendous success. Students joined together in cross-grade “families,” connecting with peers and teachers they might not usually work with. It was a joyful and meaningful start to building stronger community relationships across our school, and we look forward to many more opportunities like this throughout the year.

We appreciate your ongoing support and partnership as we move into this full and engaging week of learning.

School Council Meeting This Week!

Our Terrace Road School Council meeting is happening this Thursday from 6:00–7:30 p.m., and we encourage all families to attend. School Council plays an important role in the democratic process of our school community—your presence and voice help shape the direction of our school. This is a valuable opportunity to stay informed, ask questions, and share feedback that supports the ongoing growth and success of our students.

We hope to see you there and appreciate your involvement in making Terrace Road a strong, collaborative learning community.

Winter Concert

Students will perform this year's Winter Concert, Once Upon a Snowman, on Thursday, December 11thEveryone (Kindergarten - Grade 6) will participate in two performances of the show, one dress rehearsal in the morning (time TBD) and a performance in the evening at 6:00pm. Details about arrival time for the evening will be sent before the concert. Students do not need any special costumes or clothing for these performances; they should wear whatever makes them feel self-assured and confident.

To support capacity challenges, the evening performance is for students and immediate family members only. We are asking each family to limit their attendance to 2-3 people as a maximum so that all students can have supporters in attendance. Should other family members or friends wish to see the show, please consider attending the dress rehearsal during the day. Seating is on a first come, first served basis.

Thank you for your ongoing support and for making time in busy schedules to come together for our talented students. The focus of these performances, as always, is to support musical understanding in a positive context that is fun and meaningful for kids.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please connect with Katie McMillan at kamcmillan@cbe.ab.ca.

Survey for School Planning

Each year, part of my commitment to the familes of TRS is to ensure that they have time to share their perspective on their student and the direction of the school at Terrace Road. This is important data that informs the decisions we make at Terrace Road. Last year, we had 50+ respondants, and so far this year, we are at 39- the more voices and data we have, the better-informed we can be in making strong decisions. Please consider completing the survey HERE. Thank you in advance!

Survey Questions- Part of the survey opens up for questions, and I will endeavor to answer those questions here on a weekly basis.

Swimming Volunteers- Sir Winston Churchill Pool!!

As you know, we are heading out swimming next week from K-Grade 6. If you are able to volunteer with your child's class, please consider doing so- particularly males to coordinate the changerooms transitions. If you have police clearance and you have time, we would certainly appreciate your support! Please reach out to your child's teacher this week.

School Conferences

Formal school conferences are upcoming on November 27 and 28th. The November 27 conferences will run from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the last slot being 7:45 p.m. The November 28 conferences will run from 8:00 a.m. through 1:00 p.m.

Conferences are an important time of year for familes and the teacher to connect over their child's learning. It is extremely important for your child to attend conferences with you, as they are part of the triangulation of learning between teacher-parents-children, and the more voice we can can give to children, the deeper their sense of agency and ownership of learning will be. You can book conferences starting November 21st via your mycbe/powerschool account.

Fees

Please keep checking your mycbe/powerschool account to keep your fees updated. The board applies fees for lunchroom, bussing, and materials. These fees can be addressed through a waiver. However, fees for in-school experiences, such as workshops and residencies, as well as field trips, are the responsibility of the family. Historically, our school council has been very generous in supplementing families that are unable to pay for fees. Our ask of families is that you stay up to date with your fees, as last year the school paid an additional $9000 from our budget to cover unpaid experiences. If you are able to pay a portion, or pay in increments, that is totally fine as well. If you are unable to make any payments, please let Sherisse know and we will make a plan. Please note that NO CHILD WILL EVER BE REFUSED ACCESS TO A FIELD TRIP OR RESIDENCY BECAUSE THEY CANNOT AFFORD THE FEE.

Student Teachers

Part of our responsibility as educators is to ensure that we are providing opportunity for the next generation of teachers to get their necessary practicum experience- what better place to gain experience than TRS!?!?! We will be welcoming a number of student teachers from the University of Lethbridge, and from St. Mary's College from now until the December break. Teachers that have agreed to work with a practicum student will be including that teacher in their weekly updates, including a brief introduction.
