I hope you all had a wonderful and refreshing Spring Break! As we step into this next chapter of the school year, I want to extend a warm welcome back to our students, families, and staff. I trust that the break provided a chance to relax, recharge, and enjoy time with loved ones. We are excited to see our hallways once again filled with energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm for learning.
With the final months of the school year ahead, we look forward to engaging classroom experiences, exciting school events, and continued growth for our students. Thank you for your ongoing support in making Terrace Road School a welcoming and inspiring place for everyone. Let’s finish the year strong together!
Learning Commons Update
In the Learning Commons this March, we were busy celebrating Ramadan and Eid, fostering a spirit of community and reflection. Our Scholastic Book Fair was an incredible success, with students and families coming together to support literacy and enrich the library's resources. A heartfelt thank you goes out to our wonderful parents for their ongoing support in nurturing a love for reading in their children and helping grow our library collection. Your involvement makes a world of difference in shaping young readers and learners!
Ki'piaapi/Crocus Photo Capture
We are excited to introduce the Ki'piaapi/Prairie Crocus Photo Challenge at Terrace Road School! This challenge is an opportunity for students to explore the beauty of nature while learning about the cultural significance of the prairie crocus to the Blackfoot people of our area in Calgary.
The prairie crocus (Anemone patens) is one of the first flowers to bloom in spring, symbolizing rejuvenation and the welcoming of a new season. For the Blackfoot people, it marks the transition from winter to spring, signaling renewal and change. This resilient flower also holds medicinal and cultural importance in Blackfoot traditions.
As part of Terrace Road School’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, we recognize the importance of learning from the land. This challenge encourages students to observe and appreciate the natural world while deepening our understanding of Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing.
How to Participate:
1. Find a Ki'piaapi/Prairie Crocus – Look for this early spring flower in natural areas around Calgary.
2. Take a Photo – Capture a creative and artistic image of the crocus in its natural habitat (Please DO NOT PICK IT!!).
3. Submit Your Photo – Send your best picture to Dan at djbuchanan@cbe.ab.ca by May 1.
We encourage students and families to take this opportunity to connect with the land and reflect on the deep relationships Indigenous peoples have with the plants around us. Selected photos will be showcased at the school and shared with our community!
We look forward to seeing your amazing photos and celebrating the beauty and significance of the prairie crocus together.
Lates
We continue to have a number of students arriving late on a daily basis. Being present for the beginning of the school day helps students to connect with their classmates and teacher, regulate emotions, and transition well into the week. We will ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS welcome students with open arms and a smile, but if you are having trouble motivating, please reach out- we are here to discuss and support in any way possible!
Commitment to Communication
A priority at Terrace Road School continues to be open and transparent communication with families regarding student learning. As such we update teacher blogs routinely, and those updates are emailed out Fridays. The blogs are also stored on our website by clicking HERE. As well, it our hope that students are routinely bringing home their communication folders. Our goal between now and the end of the year is for each class to send home 4 pieces of writing, as that is one of our School Development Plan goals at Terrace Road School this year. Along with the evidence of student writing, there will be a rubric for students to complete with a parent or caregiver, as well as a Two Stars and a Wish on the back (two highlights of the work, and a next step. Below is what you should expect to see from the school--our commitment is to send home the 4 pieces of writing between now and June to allow families to see how their students are doing, and to provide voice in learning.
Survey Season
As you know, we continue to plan for this school year, with an eye for preparing for next year. We also continue to grow in terms of our population- and the more input we can have from families, the better informed we will be in making decisions that impact families, students and teachers for next year. There is the following survey to complete:
- Enrollment Survey- 2025-26 We are beginning to plan for the 2025-26 school year with Kindergarten enrollments coming in quickly and CBE planning and numbers projections coming to schools in the spring. Please take time to fill out this survey that will help us to better understand real student numbers for next year: SURVEY
