Dear Families,

Winter is going out with a bang this week, bringing colder temperatures and plenty of fresh snowfall. Despite the wintry weather, our school has been filled with warmth and excitement, especially this morning as our Grade 1-2 students hosted our monthly Celebration of Learning. It was a joy to see their enthusiasm and hard work on display, and we are so proud of their accomplishments. The focus was specifically on the Roots of Empathy program, which Ms. Farhana and Ms. Axford have been working with this year. A local volunteer mother has been bringing in her 5 month old daughter for students to learn from, grown connections with, and develop a stronger sense of empathy. Thank you to all who attended and supported our young learners!

Book Fair

Our annual book fair will look a little bit different this year. There will be some times for students to preview on Friday, March 14th, and Monday, March 17th, but we will not be having our typical parent-involved book fair due to the ongoign CUPE strike. Students will have the option of bringing in some money on the 17th-20th, depending on their set schedule, to go to the library with their classmates and make some purchases. There will be a finalized schedule sent out mid-week so that families have time to plan accordingly. There is no obligation to purchase. Funds raised will be used to support teacher wish-lists. Grade 6 students will, of course, be able to select their Legacy Book, which will remain in the Library as a marker of their time at our building.

School Conferences

Due to ongoing job action, all Calgary Board of Education conferences have been shifted online. Thursday evening conferences will run from 4:30-8:00 pm, with the last conference starting at 7:45. Friday conferences will run from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with the last conference starting at 12:45. Conferences will open for booking by families THIS FRIDAY at 8:00 a.m.

Purdy's Fundraiser

We have started our Purdy's fundraiser, in which funds collected are used to purchase needs for the school, support student learning, and build out community! Fliers were sent home last week with details attached. The fundraiser will end March 25th, and pick-up will happen on April 7th.

FEO Open House

Our number one feeder school, FEO, will be having their open house for grade 6 families this Thursday. The event will be online and I have attached a poster with the link to the TEAMS event which will start at 6:30 pm on Thursday.

Parent Access and Doors

Safety remains our number 1 priority at all times at TRS. As such, we will continue to ensure that ALL PARENTS and VISITORS to the school ONLY enter the school through the front doors. This way, we are able to know and control exactly who is in our building at ALL TIMES and prevent potential dangerous situations from occurring. Than you for your support with this.

Learning Commons Update

In February, the TRS Learning Commons was a hub of activity! We showcased a selection of new books for students to explore, offering fresh reads to spark curiosity. Throughout the month, we recognized Black History Month by highlighting important stories and voices that celebrate Black history, culture, and achievements. We also participated in Pink Shirt Day, promoting kindness and standing up against bullying. It was a great month of learning, reflection, and community!

Lates

We continue to have a number of students arriving late on a daily basis. Being present for the beginning of the school day helps students to connect with their classmates and teacher, regulate emotions, and transition well into the week. We will ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS welcome students with open arms and a smile, but if you are having trouble motivating, please reach out- we are here to discuss and support in any way possible!

Commitment to Communication

A priority at Terrace Road School continues to be open and transparent communication with families regarding student learning. As such we update teacher blogs routinely, and those updates are emailed out Fridays. The blogs are also stored on our website by clicking HERE. As well, it our hope that students are routinely bringing home their communication folders. Our goal between now and the end of the year is for each class to send home 4 pieces of writing, as that is one of our School Development Plan goals at Terrace Road School this year. Along with the evidence of student writing, there will be a rubric for students to complete with a parent or caregiver, as well as a Two Stars and a Wish on the back (two highlights of the work, and a next step. Below is what you should expect to see from the school--our commitment is to send home the 4 pieces of writing between now and June to allow families to see how their students are doing, and to provide voice in learning.

Survey Season

As you know, we continue to plan for this school year, with an eye for preparing for next year. We also continue to grow in terms of our population- and the more input we can have from families, the better informed we will be in making decisions that impact families, students and teachers for next year. There are the following surveys to complete:

  1. Education Assurance Survey- This information is used to get a pulse of the community and to better understand how staff, students, and families are feeling about the school in general. All families of children in grade 4,5,6 at TRS will have received an email today with a link to the survey, and their random access code to initiate the survey.
  2. Enrollment Survey- 2025-26 We are beginning to plan for the 2025-26 school year with Kindergarten enrollments coming in quickly and CBE planning and numbers projections coming to schools in the spring. Please take time to fill out this survey that will help us to better understand real student numbers for next year: SURVEY
  3. Terrace Road School Planning Survey- Budget and Fees We typically get 15-20 results for this survey. We would like to have more information, so please do consider completing at your earliest convenience! This survey can be accessed HERE.

Facility Operator

There is currently a strike involving the facility operators in all CBE schools. Information on the strike is emailed directly to families, and can be accessed from our school web site. We are open and business as usual- though breakfast club is happening outside due to the fact that there is limited ability to clean spills!
