Welcome back to Terrace Road School, and happy New Year! We hope our families had a restful, joyful holiday break filled with time to reconnect and recharge. January 5th marks an exciting return to routines, friendships, and learning, and we are so looking forward to welcoming our students back into the building.

As we begin this new chapter of the school year, we are thrilled to share that several activities are starting up, including Pride Club, Alien In-Line Skating, and Chess Club. These clubs reflect the diverse interests of our learners and provide meaningful spaces for connection, inclusion, creativity, and fun. We are grateful to the staff who make these opportunities possible and to the students who continue to show curiosity and enthusiasm beyond the classroom.

Thank you, as always, for your continued partnership and support. We can’t wait to see our learners’ smiling faces back at TRS and to continue building a caring, vibrant community together in the weeks ahead.

Student Lates

We continue to welcome a number of students who are arriving late to school on frequent basis- before the break, we were averaging 20-25 late students per day. Weather and road closures aside, these chronic lates can be problematic for students and for classes. Students are missing out on instructional time, and students entering learnin spaces after 8:43 can be disruptive for the learning of others. DID YOU KNOW: If a student is late 5 minutes per day, that time adds up to 15 hours of missed time in a school year?

Welcome to all new families considering TB Riley as their home school in 2026-27:

Our annual TLC Open House will be Thursday, January 22, 2025 at 6pm. Any families that are considering the TLC program for their child will have an opportunity to hear more about the program, ask questions, and engage in a school tour.

In addition, because families from Terrace Road School and the Montgomery community have been recently designated to TBR, we will be holding an open house for these families prior to our TLC presentation at 5pm. All families from this community are welcome to attend the meeting at 5pm to hear about our school and our regular program. If families are interested, they are welcome to stay for our TLC presentation as well. This is optional.

Montgomery Parents and New Families to TBR Open House – Thursday January 22, 2026 @5:00pm

TLC Open House at Thomas B Riley – Thursday January 22, 2026 @6:00pm

Please note that we will not have another opportunity to offer an Open House until June to welcome new students and families.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Sincerely,

Tiffany Austin

School Council Meeting

Please do consider attending our School Council Meetings at Terrace Road. Your voice matters in decision making, and the more people we have in attendance, the clearer our communication can be with families in regards to decision making at TRS.

Alien In-Line and Fees

Fees for Alien In-Line are now applied to your PowerSchool Accounts. Please pay these at your earliest convenience, as we start our Alien In-Line residency this Friday.

New Kindergarten Registration – Opens January 12
Terrace Road School will begin accepting Kindergarten registrations on January 12. Families are encouraged to review the registration details and prepare any necessary documents in advance. For more information, please visit the CBE website: Kindergarten Registration Information

Winter Weather Preparedness
As colder weather sets in, we want to ensure that all students remain safe, warm, and ready to learn throughout the school day. Please ensure your child arrives at school each day dressed appropriately for winter conditions, including snow pants, mittens, a toque, and warm winter boots, especially for outdoor recess and physical activity.

We also request that every student keep a pair of indoor shoes at school. This helps maintain dry, safe hallways and ensures students are comfortable in their classrooms after coming in from the snow.

Thank you for supporting a safe and healthy winter season at Terrace Road School.

School Zone Safety
With winter upon us and daylight hours changing, it is particularly important that we work together to maintain safety in our school zone. Our student patrols are active each morning and afternoon, assisting families at the designated crosswalks. Please remind your children to follow their guidance and wait for the patrols’ signal before crossing.

We ask all families to support a safer school environment by observing posted speed limits, avoiding jaywalking, and always using marked crosswalks—even if it requires a few extra steps. Modeling these safe habits reinforces important safety lessons for our students.

Finally, we encourage families to discuss the importance of being alert when crossing the street. Looking both ways, pausing before stepping off the curb, and minimizing distractions such as headphones or phones can make a meaningful difference.

Thank you for helping ensure the safety of all members of our Terrace Road community.

As we move forward into the heart of winter and the remainder of the school year, we are grateful for the strong partnership we share with our Terrace Road families. Thank you for your continued support, encouragement, and trust. Together, we will continue to create a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging learning environment where every child feels valued and inspired to grow. We look forward to all that the coming weeks will bring and appreciate you being an important part of our TRS community.
