Dear Terrace Road Families,
As we head into the week ahead, we are noticing a shift toward colder winter temperatures. Please ensure students are dressed warmly for outdoor recess and transitions to and from school so they can remain safe and comfortable throughout the day. We also invite families to join us for our next School Council meeting on January 22 at 6:30 p.m. Your partnership and participation are always appreciated, and we look forward to connecting with you as we continue working together to support our students.
Fees
Last week, we sent home paper copies of school fees. Please make every effort to pay your fees or come into the office for support with signing waiver forms with the CBE.
Internal Fund-Raiser- New Laminator
Our laminator at TRS is dying a slow and painful death. The laminator is a tool that we use routinely to support learning across each grade in our school. Because our school funds and council have limited resources this year, we have opened up a fundraising and donations page to support us in purchasing a new laminator via Education Matters. The great thing about Education Matters is that nearly 100% of the donation goes directly to the school, which is great when we are fundraising for specific items. Please access the Terrace Road School Fundraising Page here: https://www.educationmatters.ca/schools/terrace-road-school. Thank you so much for your support!
Polar Tigers Club
We are excited to introduce the Polar Tigers Club, an optional opportunity for students who enjoy outdoor play and would like to go outside during inclement weather when temperatures fall below -20°C. Participation in Polar Tigers allows students to remain active and engaged outdoors during extreme cold, provided safety guidelines are followed.
Families who wish for their child to take part must complete and sign the Polar Tigers Club permission form. A communication and consent form were sent home last week. If you have not yet returned the signed document and would like your child to participate, please do so as soon as possible, as students without signed permission will remain indoors during these conditions.
Thank you for your continued support in helping us keep students safe while offering choice and flexibility during winter weather.
TRS Flex Time- After-School Learning Support
We are excited to introduce TRS Flex – Homework Help, a new after-school learning support opportunity for students. TRS Flex will take place every Wednesday from 3:15–4:00 p.m. in the Learning Commons and will be facilitated by Mr. Buchanan and Ms. Hassen, beginning January 21.
This program is intended to support students who may need extra assistance with assignments or learning concepts. Students are encouraged to bring work they would like help with, ask questions, and strengthen their understanding in a calm, small-group environment.
A parent consent form was sent home last week. Once permission is received, students may choose to sign up on a weekly basis, depending on their individual needs. Participation is flexible and designed to respond to student learning needs as they arise.
We are pleased to offer this additional support and look forward to helping our students build confidence, skills, and independence in their learning.
Student Lates
We continue to see a number of students arriving late to school on a regular basis. Prior to the break, we were averaging 20–25 late arrivals each day. While we understand that weather and occasional road disruptions can occur, frequent late arrivals can have a significant impact on both students and classrooms. Students who arrive after 8:43 a.m. miss important instructional time, and late entry into learning spaces can interrupt the learning of others.
Did you know? Arriving just five minutes late each day adds up to approximately 15 hours of missed learning time over the course of a school year. We appreciate families’ support in ensuring students arrive on time whenever possible.
Welcome to New Families Considering Thomas B. Riley School (2026–27)
Families considering Thomas B. Riley School as their home school for the 2026–27 school year are invited to attend our upcoming Open House on Thursday, January 22.
Because families from Terrace Road School and the Montgomery community have recently been designated to TBR, we will begin the evening with a general program information session at 5:00 p.m. This session will provide an overview of our school and regular program. Families are then welcome to stay for the TLC Open House at 6:00 p.m., which will focus specifically on the TLC program. Attendance at the TLC session is optional.
Event Details:
- Montgomery Parents & New Families Open House: 5:00 p.m.
- TLC Open House: 6:00 p.m.
- Date: Thursday, January 22, 2026
- Location: Thomas B. Riley School Gymnasium, 3915 – 69 Street NW
Please note that this will be our only Open House prior to June. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Austin at taaustin@cbe.ab.ca. We look forward to welcoming you.
School Council Meeting
Families are encouraged to attend our Terrace Road School Council meetings, as your voice plays an important role in school decision-making. Strong attendance helps ensure clear communication and meaningful collaboration between families and the school. Our next meeting will take place on January 22 at 6:30 p.m. We hope to see you there.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support and partnership. Together, we create a strong, caring school community where students can thrive academically and socially. We appreciate your ongoing communication, involvement, and commitment to Terrace Road School, and we look forward to another positive and productive week ahead.
