Dear TRS Families,

As we move through another exciting week at Terrace Road School, there is plenty happening in our learning community. We are looking forward to Papa John’s Fun Lunch this Thursday—a favourite for many of our students—and we are also excited to have Alien In-Line with us all week, supporting skill development, confidence, and active learning. These opportunities add to the vibrant experiences we are proud to offer our learners, and we thank families for your continued support in making them possible.

Fees

We will be sending home fee invoices with students today for outstanding school fees. Please make every effort to pay outstanding fees, or come to the office and we will support in helping access to waiver documents. Thank you!

Polar Tigers Club

We are excited to introduce the Polar Tigers Club, an optional opportunity for students who enjoy outdoor play and would like to go outside during inclement weather when temperatures fall below -20°C. Participation in Polar Tigers allows students to remain active and engaged outdoors during extreme cold, provided safety guidelines are followed.

Families who wish for their child to take part must complete and sign the Polar Tigers Club permission form. A communication and consent form were sent home last week. If you have not yet returned the signed document and would like your child to participate, please do so as soon as possible, as students without signed permission will remain indoors during these conditions.

Thank you for your continued support in helping us keep students safe while offering choice and flexibility during winter weather.

TRS Flex Time- After-School Learning Support

We are pleased to introduce TRS Flex – Homework Help, a new after-school support opportunity for students. TRS Flex will run every Wednesday from 3:15–4:00 p.m. in the Learning Commons and will be hosted by Mr. Buchanan and Ms. Hassen starting January 21.

This program is designed to provide students with extra help and guidance on concepts or assignments they may be finding challenging. Students are encouraged to bring work they would like additional support with, ask questions, and build confidence in a small, supportive setting.

A parent consent form will be sent home this week. Once consent is provided, students may sign up on a weekly basis whenever they feel they need extra help or clarification on a topic. Participation is flexible and based on student need.

We look forward to offering this supportive space for our learners and helping them grow in confidence and independence.

School Zone Safety

Student safety is our highest priority at Terrace Road School, and I am writing to reinforce the importance of following all school zone traffic expectations. During arrival and dismissal, AMA Safety Patrols are on duty to support students crossing intersections safely; however, yesterday I observed multiple vehicles failing to stop at patrol-controlled crossings, requiring direct intervention. This behaviour is unacceptable and places students and patrols at serious risk. All drivers are expected to slow down, remain attentive, follow patrol directions at all times, and obey posted signage, including the request to refrain from making U-turns within the school zone. Thank you for your immediate cooperation in helping ensure a safe environment for all members of our school community.

Student Lates

We continue to welcome a number of students who are arriving late to school on frequent basis- before the break, we were averaging 20-25 late students per day. Weather and road closures aside, these chronic lates can be problematic for students and for classes. Students are missing out on instructional time, and students entering learnin spaces after 8:43 can be disruptive for the learning of others. DID YOU KNOW: If a student is late 5 minutes per day, that time adds up to 15 hours of missed time in a school year?

Welcome to all new families considering TB Riley as their home school in 2026-27:

Our annual TLC Open House will be Thursday, January 22, 2025 at 6pm. Any families that are considering the TLC program for their child will have an opportunity to hear more about the program, ask questions, and engage in a school tour.

In addition, because families from Terrace Road School and the Montgomery community have been recently designated to TBR, we will be holding an open house for these families prior to our TLC presentation at 5pm. All families from this community are welcome to attend the meeting at 5pm to hear about our school and our regular program. If families are interested, they are welcome to stay for our TLC presentation as well. This is optional.

We look forward to seeing you there!

School Council Meeting

Please do consider attending our School Council Meetings at Terrace Road. Your voice matters in decision making, and the more people we have in attendance, the clearer our communication can be with families in regards to decision making at TRS. Our next meeting is January 22 at 6:30 PM

As always, thank you for your continued partnership and support of Terrace Road School. Your involvement and care make a meaningful difference in the daily experiences of our students. We appreciate your ongoing communication, cooperation, and commitment to keeping our school community safe, engaged, and thriving. We wish everyone a wonderful week ahead and look forward to all that is to come.
