Good morning TRS Families! I hope that everyone had a restful weekend and that you were able to spend some time outdoors with your families! We are well into April at this time, and things are getting busy and exciting at TRS!! Please do take a look class updates and calendars so that you do not miss any of the upcoming events at the school! I am currently in Banff at a Leadership Conference and Ms. Hassen and Ms. Harbourne are at the school if you should need anything at all. I will be back on Wednesday!

This year continues to go by so quickly, which is a good sign that everyone is enjoying their time. Activities are starting up and days are getting longer- such a great time of year. If your plans for next year have changed recently, and you will no longer be attending TRS next year, please let myself or Sherisse know at the office and we will support in any transitions that occur! On the same note, if you know of anyone that plans on attending TRS, advise the family to connect with the office as quickly as possible so that we are able to make the best informed decisions possible with the information that we have!

Logo Design

We are so very excited to start the process of Logo Design at Terrace Road School! This is an important step in continuing to build our school community, identity, and sense of belonging at this amazing school!

One of the key pieces in building a sense of belonging and well-being is having students, families, teachers, and community identify with their school and what it stands for. In beginning this journey, we will listen, be collaborative, and ultimately choose a design that speaks to what we believe Terrace Road School and the community of Montgomery mean for the stakeholders of the TRS. Currently, our mascot is a Tiger designed a number of years ago, and our motto is Friendships and Futures. We want to honour the past, but also align with what Terrace Road School stands for now in its current form and context with the future in mind. We want to honour the people, the 'big ideas' around this community, and amazing geography within which the school and greater Montgomery community is located.

Definitions
Logo A symbol, name or other design that represents the unique nature of a school. Logos should be
easily understood and recognized. Logos can help establish a connection with your school
community.
Motto A short sentence, phrase or words that represent the guiding principles of a school.
Mascot A person, animal or thing that helps to strengthen a school’s identity (this is where the Tiger could still be attached to the school)
Identity All of the visible elements of a brand, such as colour, design, motto and logo that present themselves to the public.

Please take time complete the survey- it should not take longer than 10 minutes. The thoughts and ideas you answer with with support the collaborative manner in which we will undertake this work in Logo Design.

Please access the survey HERE.

Thank you!

Lates

We continue to have a number of students arriving late on a daily basis. Being present for the beginning of the school day helps students to connect with their classmates and teacher, regulate emotions, and transition well into the week. We will ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS welcome students with open arms and a smile, but if you are having trouble motivating, please reach out- we are here to discuss and support in any way possible!

Commitment to Communication

A priority at Terrace Road School continues to be open and transparent communication with families regarding student learning. As such we update teacher blogs routinely, and those updates are emailed out Fridays. The blogs are also stored on our website by clicking HERE. As well, it our hope that students are routinely bringing home their communication folders. Our goal between now and the end of the year is for each class to send home 4 pieces of writing, as that is one of our School Development Plan goals at Terrace Road School this year. Along with the evidence of student writing, there will be a rubric for students to complete with a parent or caregiver, as well as a Two Stars and a Wish on the back (two highlights of the work, and a next step. Below is what you should expect to see from the school--our commitment is to send home the 4 pieces of writing between now and June to allow families to see how their students are doing, and to provide voice in learning.

Learning Commons Update

In the Learning Commons this March, we were busy celebrating Ramadan and Eid, fostering a spirit of community and reflection. Our Scholastic Book Fair was an incredible success, with students and families coming together to support literacy and enrich the library's resources. A heartfelt thank you goes out to our wonderful parents for their ongoing support in nurturing a love for reading in their children and helping grow our library collection. Your involvement makes a world of difference in shaping young readers and learners!

Ki'piaapi/Crocus Photo Capture

We are excited to introduce the Ki'piaapi/Prairie Crocus Photo Challenge at Terrace Road School! This challenge is an opportunity for students to explore the beauty of nature while learning about the cultural significance of the prairie crocus to the Blackfoot people of our area in Calgary.
The prairie crocus (Anemone patens) is one of the first flowers to bloom in spring, symbolizing rejuvenation and the welcoming of a new season. For the Blackfoot people, it marks the transition from winter to spring, signaling renewal and change. This resilient flower also holds medicinal and cultural importance in Blackfoot traditions.
As part of Terrace Road School’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, we recognize the importance of learning from the land. This challenge encourages students to observe and appreciate the natural world while deepening our understanding of Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing.
How to Participate:
1. Find a Ki'piaapi/Prairie Crocus – Look for this early spring flower in natural areas around Calgary.
2. Take a Photo – Capture a creative and artistic image of the crocus in its natural habitat (Please DO NOT PICK IT!!).
3. Submit Your Photo – Send your best picture to Dan at djbuchanan@cbe.ab.ca by May 1.
We encourage students and families to take this opportunity to connect with the land and reflect on the deep relationships Indigenous peoples have with the plants around us. Selected photos will be showcased at the school and shared with our community!

We look forward to seeing your amazing photos and celebrating the beauty and significance of the prairie crocus together.

Take good care, TRS Families and reach out if you ever have any questions or concerns!

Cheers,

Dan
