Dear TRS Families,

I wanted to reach out regarding the Terrace Road School Bell Time Changes that you received messaging on this morning from the Calgary Board of Education.

These bell time changes are in response to Alberta Education’s School Transportation Amendment Regulation, which comes into effect on September 1, 2025. As a result of this amendment, walk zones across the city of Calgary and for each CBE School have changed, resulting in increased ridership. There are currently more than 60,000 riders, with thousands more slated to start next year. As a result, the CBE has had to rework bus schedules and travel times, while maintaining a reliable and well-coordinated transportation system. These changes to schedules necessitated a change in bell times at many Calgary Board of Education Schools, including Terrace Road School.

Please know that as a school, we will respond to this board decision with care and diligence, ensuring that students have the required number of instructional hours (950 hours per year for grades 1-6 and 475 for kindergarten). We will do our utmost to ensure that children will have time outside, both for recess and unstructured play, and for learning. One of our core beliefs is that children need to be outside daily when possible, and this will continue. With the CBE mandated bell time changes, we are shorter each day by 16 minutes Monday-Thursday, and longer on Fridays by 16 minutes, so we will have to get creative on achieving that goal- and we will.

In May, once we begin looking at in-school scheduling and times for recess and lunch, we will once again update families on decisions that have been made. Thank you for your continued support and understanding during this time of change. Our goal is to ensure that this is as smooth as possible.

Please see our school website here.

Thank you,

Dan
